Family: Brittany Murphy was ill days before death

LOS ANGELES – Brittany Murphy was ill with flulike symptoms in the days before her death and prescription medications were taken from her home, the Los Angeles coroner’s office said Monday.

The 32-year-old star of films such as “Clueless” and “8 Mile” died Sunday morning after collapsing at her Hollywood Hills home. Paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Police said there was no evidence of foul play.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said they will conduct an autopsy Monday to try to determine what killed the actress, and said her death appeared to be from natural causes. He said the illness, reported to officials by her family, could have contributed to her death, but it will be weeks before a final determination is made.

Toxicology tests will be performed, and officials will contact her personal physician to get a better sense of Murphy’s medical history, Winter said.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy was on a stretcher.

The healthcare reform bill that will go to the vote on the US Senate floor this week falls well short of Barack Obama’s original vision for healthcare reform.

As the president took office at the beginning of this year, he laid out a plan for reform that would include a robust “public option” for a nationwide government-backed plan that would inject a bolt of competition into the inefficient medical insurance market.

Instead, he is set next month to sign into law a bill that, while dramatically expanding healthcare insurance coverage, will largely leave insurance in the hands of private companies.

Still, Mr Obama has been at pains over the last week to stress that his administration is nevertheless on the “precipice” of improving the daily lives of millions of Americans.

“With today’s developments it now appears that the American people will have the vote they deserve on genuine reform that offers security to those who have health insurance and affordable options to those who do not,” the president said on Saturday after Harry Reid, the majority leader in the Senate, unveiled a bill that can attract the 60 votes needed to pass the upper chamber.

Upon hearing that Brittany Murphy died for a cardiac arrest at the young age of 32, many assume that the actress’ death was connected to drugs. Others have a theory that something else was involved that young Hollywood women are all too familiar with: an eating disorder. For years, the media has speculated whether or not Brittany Murphy was anorexic. In 2006, she came forward, denying the claims. Upon her death though, these rumors are once more circulating. Even some of her fellow actors think it might be the case. On his Twitter page Jamie Kennedy said, “Britney they say died of cardiac arrest from anorexia. Jesus christ how long before we fuckin realize we r too hard on women in this biz.”

If that’s the case, I say shame on the media on setting a standard that Hollywood women must be thin as a toothpick to be beautiful and successful. This type of scrutiny is enough to make anyone go crazy. I just hope Jessica Simpson doesn’t do anything drastic from all of the comment she’s been getting this year.
